Global Issues:

Humanity's right to health and equality

Although full of diseases and and unfair lack of opportunities for those lower in the caste system, the undercity of Annawandi, India nonetheless presents a case of individuals sticking to their morals and preserving their values. While tuberculosis and corruption ravage the society, individual families support each other, sustaining tremulous friendships and loyalties. Please keep in mind that all of the characters that Katherine Boo develops so wonderfully in her book Behind the Beautiful Forevers are real people with their own stories not recorded in her work. If you would like to help fuel the fire of hope that the Indians of Annawadi have kindled in their society, there are numerous opportunities for you to do so. As Boo's report of the Husains shows us, one man's trash is another's treasure, and every person who sets forth to change one family's life can affect an entire village.
